Let’s go back to a January 1964 edition of the Optimistic when the newspaper ran a special “Know Your Friendly Neighborhood Ladner Merchant” section.
Then-Mayor (known as Wardens at the time) Clarence Taylor was one of the merchants featured.
He owned the electrical store Taylor-Riddell Ltd. at 4862 Delta Street.
It was started by Taylor and Steve Riddell in 1946, providing round-the-clock service for radio, television and electrical appliances.
Riddell left the business in 1956 and Scotty Leach became a partner and shareholder.
In 1960, Leach became store manager when Taylor’s duties as mayor took him away from running the business.
It was the only Ladner store at the time that offered its customers recognized credit card service.
“Downtown credit card service is comparable to any major credit card service in town. The credit card can be used in many stores in Vancouver as well as Taylor-Riddell’s. Each customer receives a booklet with the stores listed where they can shop,” the article states.
Born in Delta and educated at Westham Island School and the former King George High School, Taylor was then entering his third term as mayor.
